GONVILLE CLUB

MEMBERS’ MEETING TO-NIGHT. REPORT FOR PAST SEASON. The annual meeting of members of the Gonvillo Swimming Club is to be held in the Gonvillo Town Hall tonight, when a report on last season’s activities will be presented and officers will be elected for the 1933-34 season. Following are extracts from the annual report: — From the opening of the season on October 1, interest was maintained throughout, and in the weekly club nights there was keen competition in all events, especially for the club banner, which proved a great innovation. Following is the list of trophy winners:—Bignell Cup, D. Gowan; Senior Cup, R. McNeil; Intermediate Cup, AL Shipman; Junior Cup, AT. Stewart; Spillane Rose Bowl, D. Gowan; Campbell Cup (diving). I). Gowan; Gilberd Cup (points prize), D. Gowan; Warnock Cup, C. Lowe. The introduction of the ladies’ sec-

tion proved a great success, the whole of the ladies’ activities being controlled by the committee. Following arc the results of the contests for the ladies’ trophies: Bignell Cup. Miss V. Summerell; Curtis Cup. Miss Al. Melton; Askew Cup, Miss D. Anderson; Junior Cup (Gonvillo schoolgirls), Afiss At. Paterson: Sewell Cup. Afiss V. Sutrmerell; Gilberd Cup, Afrs. A. Alexander; Bonner Cup, Afiss J. Thompson. The banner competition resulted in a win for the captain’s side. The usual interest was maintained in inter-club contests for the Tingey Cup, the Thomas Relay Shield, and the Crotty Cup. Some fine finishes were provided, and eventually all these trophies remained in the Central Club’s possession. To the winners congratulations are extended.

Two carnivals were hold by the club during the season nnd they proved successful from all points of view. The club met with a fair share of success -in the district championships, which wore ably controlled by the centre. Gonvillo again proved successful in the Polo Cup championship, a contest which created great interest. Congratulations arc extended to kindred clubs on their successes in championship events, and also to the following individual members of the Gonvillo Club:—Polo Cup. Gonvillo Club; ladies’ diving, 100yds. freestyle, 50yds. backstroke. 220yds. free style, Gifford Marshall Cup, Miss ID. Anderson; 220yds. and 50yds., Miss V. Melton; 220yds. intermediate girls and 100yds. intermediate girls, Miss V. Sunimeroll; 50yds. junior girls’ breaststroke, AL Merewether; 100 yds. intermediate boys’ breaststroke and Taiboys Cup, B. McKillop; 220yds. intermediate boys’ freestyle, IT. Palmer.

The Gonvillo Club was not represented at the Now Zealand championships, the first time in many years. To Mr. C. V. Bullivant, who won tho Bridgc-to-Briuge Race, congratulations are extended, as also are they to Afiss D. Anderson on winning tho ladies’ section of that race and also annexing the Paterson Cup. During tho season C. V. Bullivant, of the Wanganui Central Club, broke rhe district record for 880yds., a feat for which he Is to be heartily congratulated.

Gonvillo paid several visits to outside clubs, and particular mention must bo made of Palmerston North, where they were hospitably entertained, the Hollowhitu Club later returning the visit. The annual dance ami social evening was held in the Gonvillo Town Hall and priAcil most enjoyable, the presentation of trophies being made at this function. Opportunity was also taken to congratulate Mr.N. Dowsett on his marriage and present him with a small token of appreciation of his services to the club. It was also pleasing to have among the gathering the patron, Mr. A. G. Bignell, who has held that position since the chib’s inception. Messrs. Bignell, Warnock, Symes and Morrison have always been keen supporters of the club. At this annual donee the girls of the club also presented Mrs. (Capl. Bonner with a bouquet in token of appreciation ot her many efforts on their behalf. To the ladies who on so many occasions during the season came forward with willing assistance, hearty thanks arc extended. Among the many were Mesdames Bonner, Alexander. Fyfe, and Melton, Misses J. Dowling, C. Oliver, L. Green and E. Svkes. Thanks arc also due to the caretaker, Mr. T. Anderson; to the Press; to members and officials of the centre; to donors of trophies, and all others’who assisted during the season; and last, but not least, to the worthy president. Mr. H. Tyler, a foundation member of the club, whose ability as an organiser in swimming affairs is too well known to require nnv further praise.
