ON THE LAWN

I SPRING RACE MEETING. There was a wintry note about the dressing at the races on Saturday for the second day’s meeting, for the weather, though fine, was dull and with a sharp tang in the breeze, which made women glad they had decided to wear fur coats, boucle cloth coats or warm costumes. Some smart examples of checks and shepherds plaids—in their many varieties—and beautifully patterned Donegal tweed suits were noticed. One or two swagger suits and coats with big patch pockets were worn, also a few attractive ensembles in the new season’s colours. Hats made of the same material as the suit or coat of heather mixture were favoured, while felts, with and without, brims, were generally worn, though here and there wore smart spring hats of straw in the now shapes and simply trimmed. One noticed, too. that furs, both nock ties and stoles wore almost, in variably worn with tailored suits, and a gailvenlourod scarf was frequently chosen to accompany—and add an air of brightness—to a. smart tweed costume wi'Xi matching hat. As for colours—apart from the heathery mixtures and many checks, wore varying shades of rod, gold and brown, a few now blues, greens, and of course a sprinkling of black.
