PATEA

RUGBY FOOTBALL Batea and Waimate made a drawn game of their match held last Wednesday for tho championship of South Taranaki. After leading equally for practically the whole of tho second round, Batea and Waimate arranged to hold the play-off, which resulted in no decision. In the first match in which they met, in the first round, Batea defeated Waimate on the latter ’a ground by 11 to 8 after one of the best games of the season. In the second round the two teams made a scoreless draw of the game played at Batea, Now, on neutral ground, the result is still the same, as the whore competition indicated. Playing to a crowd of some nine hundred, the two- teams gave a display which, while not brilliant, was fast and good. Waimate lost the toss and played with the wind and sun behind them. In the second half Batea, with the same advantages, played the better name and had the territorial advantage, keeping Waimate almost continuously hemmed down on their line. The Waimate forwards overshadowed the Batea pack and prevented the Batea Tacks from showing their good combination very often. Both packs of forwards played well and practically ruled the game, with Waimate in the ascendant. Passing was erratic among the backs, but the Batea line showed l etter combination than their opponents. Teams lined out as follow: Batea.—Malcolm; Paterson, Edwards, Petersen; J. Crawford, Bourke (Ist.); Gudgeon; Couch, McTaggart, Brough-

ton; Richards, Bremer, B. Crawford,. Baldwin; Wills (captain).. Waimate.—l. MacDonald; K. McDonald, C. Whalen, Hill; Botaka, Sm i genor; L. Whalen; Gargan, Murfii.l Sutton; Rei, Espin, Hikaxa, C. Bourke; Burke. In the first spell Waimate were very unlucky in not scoring, Batea being, kept on the defensive for the major part. Batea were the first to score. Prom a scrum right under the posts, Gudgeon received and passed out to bourke, who passed on to the winger, Petersen, who ran round on the blind side to score. His own kick failed. Prom a hard fight in which Batea were hard put to it to keep Waimate out, there was a sudden change in play. Paterson intercepted a pass between the Waimate line and dashed away with Edwards in support. He passed to Edwards when MacDonald loomed in the way and between them, with exchange of passes, the line was reached, Paterson scoring. Paterson failed to find the uprights. Waimate levelled the scores with a try in which the forwards forced their way to the line, Gargan scoring. Just before half-time, after Paterson’s try, a good kick to touch by Potaka put Batea on the defence again, and for offside play by J. Crawford, C. Whalen kicked a good goal. Play in the second spell was more uninteresting. Knocks-on slowed the game up, scrums being frequent in both spells. Bad luck followed both teams, but Batea kept the Waimate team well down on their line for the most of the spell, only splendid defence keeping the Batea men out, and the game finished without further score. For Waimate Gargan played the game of two men in the forwards,

while Hikaka and Espin also played ;>olid games. The \\ annate lu* wards icpuulcdly broke through the line-outs and gave some splendid exhibitions oj cai rynig the bah al toe. Guigun was ia im er ui sticnglii in hard light work. Among the backs Surgenui, L. nniiieu (iiali), and C. Whalen (centre), played soundly, the centre and 11L winger, burgenor, doing most of the penetrating of Batea s defence, with a oiana leuJing them welt from scrums with last passes. Among the Batea players Wills, ■bicnie, ( Richards and B Urawforu were dependable men, and their weight in hard forward tussles helped Batea coiisideiably. Gudgeon played his usual high standard at half, overshadowing his opposite, Whalen, while J. Crawford, as second live-eighths, was splendid on both attack and defence. D. Paterson, who had been brought back from Wellington to play, was another outstanding player for Palea. Patch’s tackling, among the backs especially, resulted in the low scojing by Waimate, who were continually followed Dy bad luck. It now seems definite that the secund play-off will take place on Saturday at Hawera again, with a cur tain-raiser supplied by the third grade Taranaki final between Patca and Stratford Technical High School. Several players in both Patea and Waimatc teams received injuries which may keep them from playing on Satur day, so that the teams are not likely to line out as they did on Wednesday. It is understood that all Maori players who were taking part in the reprt) sentative match at New Plymouth on Saturday will play for their club. MANUTAHI DAIRY FACTORY There was practically a full muster of shareholders at the annual meeting of the Alanutahi Co-operative Dairy Company, held last Wednesday, Mr. S. C. Tonks presiding. The annual report of the directors was read as follows: — The price realised for the company’s produce shipped on open consignment has enabled your directors to make an approximate advance payment of BWI per lb. for butter-fat supplied over the season. The amount to the credit of the appropriation account will provide for a further payment to suppliers, but until the balance of the cheese unsold is disposed of and the account sales arc to hand, it will not be possible to state what amount will be available for distribution. After the adoption of the report the directors were elected as follow: .Messrs. R. S. Scown, H. Cornwall and C. Wills being re-elected, while Mr. B. Wills took Mr. S. Macdonald ’s place as director, owing to Mr. Macdonald's change of factory.
