SPORTS AT “ KNOTTINGLEY.” The fact that a small band of relief workers, 18 in all, entertained a whole district within a radius of from 8 to 10 miles, is an event unique in the history of unemployment in New Zealand, but such was the case during the weekend. when members of the married men’s camp at “Knottingley,” on Santof' station, held a sports meeting. JiJarlier in the week invitations had been sent out to men in the various camp 3 in and around Santoft, and also to school children in the district. From 11 o’clock onwards parents and children began to arrive at the camp by ear, motor-cycle, dray and on ponies, between 40 and 50 putting in an appearance, to be greatly augmented later by single men from the other camps. All were heartily welcomed. Lunch was served at 12.30, and many highly complimentary remarks were made by the visitors on the excellence of the cooking and the well thought-out provision made for the children, who appreciated the cakes and sweets. No entrance fees were charged, and the prizes (of which there were a great number) were kindly donated by Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, of Wellington. These were presented to the winners by Mr J. Rattray, and the successful coni petitors were cheered on coming forward to accept their trophies. At the conclusion of the sports the visitors were entertained at tea, which was done full justice to. Mr. J. Grant thanked all for their patronage, and expressed the hope that they had enjoyed the efforts made by the* camp members for their entertainment.
