WRESTLING

BOUT AT AUCKLAND SUCCESS OF NEWCOMER. RUMBERG BEATS “WHISKERS.” [ Per Press Association. J AUCKLAND, July 17. Hal Ilumberg, the American wrestler, made a successful debut in New Zealand when he defeated “Whiskers” Blake to-night. The contest ended in the fifth round when Rumberg felled his opponent with a flying scissors and obtained a fall -with a body press. He had previously gained a fall in the third round with a press following a spin round by tho legs. It was evident from the start that Rumberg was too good for his opponent. WALKER AT DUNEDIN DEFEAT OF AL PEREIRA. RECORD CROWD ATTRACTED. [ Per Press Association. J DUNEDIN, July 17. The biggest crowd which has ever been in the Town Hall saw George Walker (14.5) defeat Al Pereira (15.4) by one submission fall, gained in the seventh round by means of a reverse toe hold. Throughout tho bout Pereira did tho attacking and Walker was content to keep out of serious trouble. The winner did not show any new holds and was never spectacular but he gave some marvellous exhibitions of strength at times, completely bursting Pereira’s holds by sheer force. With defeat staring him in the face Pereira sprang out of his corner and staged a desperate last round. He clamped on a body scissors time after time but Walker always managed to twist himself free, and at the final gong was probably the fresher of the two. COUNT VARGA TOO GOOD ‘ ‘ WRESTLING DETECTIVE ’ ’ BEATEN. LIVELY, ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY. [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, July 17. A back-loop slam in the sixth round terminated with unexpected suddenness the New Zealand debut of the newly-imported wrestler “Hank” Oswald (14.10), when he met Count Varga (14.8) in the Town HaU»

The American, who was billed as the “wrestling detective,” took a fall in the fourth round with an aeroplane spin and dump after a series of spectacular flying tackles. He was the pacemaker of the contest and proved himself a lively, attractive matman, but Varga’s slam lacked nothing in completeness and the newcomer, badly dazed, was unable to continue.
