OLD RAILWAY VAN

RELIC OF EARLY LINES. A relic of the early Canterbury railways, an old waggon which saw service on the Rakaia-Ashburton Forks Railway Company’s line about 50 years ago, is still being used by the Railways Department at Christchurch for heavy work. This veteran waggon was brought from England by the company, which built and operated the Methven branch line before it was bought by the Government, and it is still regarded as one of the most comfortable vans that are being run by the department. The van has two bunks inside, next to the guard’s compartment, and on the roof there can still be seen the old lookf

out tower where the guard was able to scan the top of the train as is done in Australia and the United States.
