RUGBY

NEXT SATURDAY’S MATCH WANGANUI v. RANGITIKEI FOR THE POWNALL TROPHY For the first time the Pownall Trophy, which is held by the champion sub-uuion team in the Wanganui Union’s district, is to be played for on Spriggens Park on Saturday. The contesting teams will be Wanganui Metropolitan (holders) and Raugitikei (challengers). It will be recollected that Wanganui won this truphy from Raugitikei at Marton last year, victory being gained by the narrow margin of one point. Early this season Wanganui journeyed to Taihape and took the trophy up with them, aud again had the “distinction” of holding it by a one-point margin. Thanks to the speed of Bullock-Douglas which was called upon by an accurate punt by Gibbons, the game was pulled out of the lire in the last few minutes. Taihape had been very unlucky. Basing their judgment ou that match, and the fact that form has deteriorated in Wanganui lately, there are many Metropolitan supporters ready to believe that Raugitikei has as good us taken the trophy already. Rugby, however, is essentially a game of surprises and the match next Saturday is as likely to be as full of them as any other. A great deal will depend upon the Wanganui pack. If it can hold its own there will be a fifty-fifty go between the rival sets of backs. Raugitikei will doubtless conic “armed to the teeth,” so to speak. In addition to interest centering in the match because of the trophy, there will be a good deal of attention focussed on the talent in both teams, as Wanganui is now faced with the job of turning out a team to play Taranaki at New Plymouth. REPRESENTATIVE GAME WIN FOR RANGITIKEI TH KAWAL’ BEATEN AT BULLS The Raugitikei representative team defeated the, To Kawau team at Bulls yesterday afternoon by 13 points lo 10. The game was fast and open but. not brilliant. In the first half To Hawaii put oil 10 points while Rungitikei did not score. Tries were secured for To Hawau by Evans and Beard, both being converted by Beard. In the second half Rnngitikei did all the scoring an I secured three tries, two of which were Converted. by llarre. Cameron. Bridge and Ah-Pheo crossed for Raugitikei. The referee was Mr E Cowdry. As a curtain-raiser to the game the final of the seven-a-side tournament for the Bailey Cup was played between Oroua Downs and Bulls, Oroua. winning by 8 points to For Oroua Downs L.
