ANOTHER DERBY STORY LORD RIDDELL'S ANECDOTE, t LONDON, June 1. At this year’s Press Club luncheon, which is now an annual function held a couple of days before the Derby, Lord Riddell, in proposing the toast of’“The Founder of the Derby Stakes,” had his usual anecdote to tell about the popular interest that is always taken in the race. He said:— “The other day the little girls in a school at Epsom were asked to write’ an essay about the Downs. One wrote that a gentleman was walking along the Downs when he saw a lady with nothing on. “He said, ‘What has happened?’ She said. ‘I put my shirt on a horse.’ (Laughter.) He handed her his overcoat, and said, ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense,’ which means, ‘You need it more than I do.’ ” (Laughter.) CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB PROPOSED RELIEF MEETING. A total of £690 in stakes for six races is provided in the programme drawn up by the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club for the proposed race meeting in aid of unemployment relief to be held at Riccarton on August 26. The first race will not start until 1.15 p.m., and admission charges have been fixed at Is for the front gate K .and Is fid for the inside enclosure. The ' 'meeting is subject to the necessary permission being obtained and remission of all taxes granted. I-or thp Grand National meeting admission charges have been fixed at Is for the front gate. Is 6d for the outside enclosure and fis for the inside enclosure.
