WOODVILLE JUBILEE

TO-MORROW’S CUP FIELD PROBLEMS FOR INVESTORS PROSPECTS DISCUSSED. (By “Kestrel.”) ' Marking the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of racing at Woodville. the jubilee meeting of the Woodville* District Jockey Club will bo held to-morrow. It is a one-day meeting, being in the nature of an “extra” fixture. Fields in every event ar e of the useful order, eight being the smallest number of acceptors in any of the seven races on the vard. The first race is set down to be run at 11.45 a.m., and the order of the programme is as follows: — Winter Hurdles H. 45 Ahuaturanga Handicap ... 12.30 Woodville Jubilee Cup .... 1-1-5 Hopeful Stakes Matahiwi Handicap 2.45 Ngawapurua Handicap . • 3.30 Goldfinch Memorial Hdcp. . 4.15 The official souvenir programme, a copy of which is acknowledged from the secretary, is a comprehensive booklet containing early records of the club, photographs of some of the earliest stewards and officials and a concise history of the club’s progress. A feature of the “card” is the reminder with each race urging patrons to make their investments early. The reminder for the seventh race is “Rlease invest promptly. We’re afraid to go home in tjie dark.’’ Such a reminder might have been useful at a few recent meetings. Prospect? in Big Race. Eleven are carded for the Jubilee Cup, for which there is a stake of £l3O besides a silver cup valued at £l5. Chopin heads the list with 9.0. which is the reward of his consistent though unluckv efforts in recent starts. Chopin was rather unfortunate at Wanganui to strike one of such quality as View Halloo the first day. for in spite of the fact that Voitre may have gone to the front too early in the Empire Handicap there is little likelihood that he would have been able to hold off View Halloo. On the second dav Chopin was asked to concede 251 b. to Lucky Alice, who was on the minimum. That he failed narrowlv was much to his credit, but the New Plymouth mare was going awav again at the finish. Chopin would be assured of a wonderful reception if he were to lead the field home to-mor-row. Juggle had a turn at hurdling and since returning to racing on the flat has recently won at Pahiatua, Feilding, Nelson and Blenheim. She may be hard to beat, but there are a couple below her in the handicap who should hold her safe. Takakua reads well but Lucky Alice, whose rchandicap for last Saturday’s win brings her up to 8.4, promises to prove the toughest of the field. She was narrowly beaten at Tauherenikau on Easter Saturday but on tho Monday made amends. She was not raced at the recent Hawera meeting owing to striking herself, but at Wanganui on Saturday led from barrier to winning post. Lucky Alice certainly makes most appeal. Courtyard was also a winner at Tauherenikau and scored again at Hastings a week later. Fairway has raced consistently among the hacks but at 7.13 he may be too close to Lucky Alice. Beacon Fire has proved himself capable of carrying big weights among the hacks and will have friends, but the Woodville-trained Copper King, winner of the ten-furlong handicap at Marton on New Year’s Day, makes more appeal. Of the other trio Princess Bell may do best. When they are summed up backers mav prefer the chances of Lucky Alice, Copper King, and Chopin. In the other events the following may be well supported:— Woodville Hurdles.—Pahu, Luna Lux. Royston. Ahuaturanga Handicap. Golden Chant, Monarchy. Anemometer. Hopeful Stakes.—Queen’s Diadem, Prince Umberto, Asterisca. Matahiwi Handicap.—Thrasher, Fairway, Beaconsfield.

Ngawapurua Handicap. Foreign Queen. Hunting Lodge, Royal Hunting. Goldfinch Memorial.—Royal Bengal, Curie, All Humbug.
