RETIRING SCHOOLMASTER. GATHERING AT KAIWHAIKI. Mr. ID. Matheson, who has been headmaster of the Upokongaro School for tho past ten years, and who is retiring from active school work, was met by the people of Kaiwhaiki Pa on Wednesday evening, when a farewell was extended him on behalf of parents and children who have been associated with the school during that period. Mr. Matheson had proved himself not only a capable teacher but he had at ail times done his utmost for the Maori children who have attended and been taught under his watchful guidance. The popularity of Mr. Matheson was amply demonstrated by the large attendance in the meeting house and every opportunity was afforded of showing forth tho appreciation in which tho departing headmaster is held. Mr. H. Metekingi, in expressing the thoughts of the Maoris of Kaiwhaiki, traversed associations with Mr. Matheson during tho past years and said how much the people appreciated his help. They would miss him greatly. The progress of the children under Mr. Matheson was a tribute to what he had done for them to enable them to keep pace with tho pakeha children attending the same school. Mr. W. R. Ford, chairman of the school committee, was also present and endorsed the expressions of the previous speaker, Mr. Matheson suitably replied saying it had been a pleasure to have been in such close touch with the people of Kaiwhaiki and to have had the opportunity of helping their children in the battle of life. Practical appreciation was shown in true Maori fashion by the presentation of gifts to Mr. and Mrs. Matheson of pin pius from the people, and from Miriama Potae, a rose bowl and shaving outfit, tobacco pouch and worked table centre. Mr. Bobby Whanarere gave a greenstone ornament and belt.

Mr. Matheson expressed the deep appreciation of himself and his wife for the beautiful gifts, which they would always value. During the evening a most enjoyable concert was provided by members of the 2YA Wanganui Maori Party, located at Kaiwhaiki Pa. Everyone enjoyed the numbers. Supper was provided at the close of a very enjoyable function. Mr. Matheson said that he expected still to see the people of Kaiwhaiki occasionally, as ho would, in till probability, be living in Wanganui
