PROFIT OF PARKING

SYSTEM IN MELBOURNE. £1530 EARNED IN A YEAR. A discussion on the question of the imposition of parking fees in the city took place at a meeting of the Melbourne City Council recently, when the chairman of the Traffic Committee, Mr. Kane, presented a report for the year 1932. Mr. Carden said that Mr. Kane had said that the department was not expected to be revenue-producing, but was intended to be a service to motorists; yet the returns showed that expenditure had been £13,698, while fees amounted to £15,228, leaving a profit of £1530. He suggested that tho fee should be 6d everywhere. Mr. Kane said that the airn of the committee was to balance the budget. “We do not ’want to make a profit from the streets, but to cover expenses,” he said. “I think that we are to he congratulated rather than blamed.” Mr. Jones asked if it were true that parking attendants were instructed to visit lanes and see that cars xVere not parked there. Mr. Kane replied that many business houses had motor-vans loading and. unloading in lanes, and it was inconvenient to have cars parked there, especially when they were there to “dodge 6d.” Parking attendants were asked to remonstrate with these car owners, and to request them to go elsewhere and to pay the fee of 6d.
