DIVINING FOR GOLD

USE OF FORKED STICK TEST IN WELLINGTON SUBURB. Equipped with a forked macrocarpa branch, a resident of Woodville, Mr. C. McDonald, gave a demonstration at Knrori, Wellington, last week, with the object of proving a claim that he could detect gold deposits. Tho demonstrator was followed by an interested gather ing as ho paced along a street. Tho forked end of the branch made a sudden dip. and after a few paces returned to the normal position. This perform ance was repeated several times and the demonstrator said that there were probably gold reefs running in a north easterly direction in this locality. A number of the witnesses took the branch in turn and most of them said they felt a decided pull toward the earth. At one test the branch broke. Two sovereigns in an envelope were concealed in long grass out of view of

the demonstrator, who later located tho ‘‘plant.” He gaid he had been gold divining for about 12 years There wa» a distinct difference in the pull exercised when water was located, he said. His preference was for the branch of a quince tree on account of its strength. The demonstrator was later driven in a motor-car over the same spots covered on foot, and the branch dipped at identical points. Ho said preparations were being made to sink a bore ia the Nelson district to prove his contentions.
