Quotas for Imports
EFFECT ON BACON PRICES LEVEL DANGEROUSLY HIGH (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 13. The Daily Herald says that owing to the quota restrictions imposed in November the wholesale price oi standard grade Danish bacon has risen from 52s per cwt. to 83s. Major Elliot is approaching the exporting countries suggesting that supplies be temporarily increased in older to keep the price at about 70s to 755, fearing that a higher price will make housewives buy cheaper breakfast meals and thus would defeat Major Elliot’s scheme to establish a large-scale bacon industry in Britain. Wholesalers state that bacon prices arc now dangerously high. Major Elliot is also trying to force the price of surplus milk for manu facturing to 6d a gallon. The price now is old. Tho Press Association learns that Major Elliot to-day consulted with Mr. Bruce in reference to a limitation of Australian supplies of tinned cream and condensed milk in the interests of the British industry. The quantities of Australian exports of these commodities to Britain are very small. The question of butter and cheese was not raised. Britain has thus far not submitted to the Dominion representatives proposals regarding restrictions. DOMINION RESTRICTIONS MUST BE VOLUNTARY [ British Official Wireless.] RUGBY, May 15. The Hon. J. H. Thomas stated tha;,. arising out of representations by the High Commissioner for New Zealand as to the general fall in the wholesale price levels in the case of butter, discussions were proceeding with, the Australian and New Zealand Govern nients as to the possibility of regu luting imports in a manner satisfac tory to all parties. He pointed out that, In view of the Ottawa agreements, the regulation of imports into the United Kingdom of butter, cheese, and other milk pro ducts from the Dominions before August, 1935, could only take place by voluntary arrangement.
