VEGETABLE CROPS

WORK TO BE DONEAs the season advances and the weather and soil becomes colder, no means should be spared that will in any way assist to promote more active, vigorous. growth, more especially with all of the more recently raised crops. This may, in a great measure, be attained by paying timely attention to thinning’the plants, keeping ad weeds removed from crops, and frequently keeping the soil stirred between the rows so as to allow as much air and warmth as possible to penetrate and assist root-action . Up to the present, weeding has been a compartively easy task, and there has been littie excuse for allowing weeds to accumulate. As soon as the soil becomes sodden with moisture, however, hoeing is not so easily performed without trampling and hardening the soil Light Digging. Light digging and turning- the weeds under is better and more effective than hoeing, unless on occasions when the soil is sufficiently dry to work without puddling. Frequent cultivation, nevertheless, should not be confined to the smaller or more-recently raised crops. Crops in every stage of development are benefited by this treatment. There is still plenty of work in the vegetable garden requiring attention, for what with the harvesting of matured crops, and the clearing away of others already epent, there will be plenty of ground that will need manuring, deep breakingup. and placing in the best possible condition for the future croppings.
