PLAY ACCEPTED
PRODUCTION IN SYDNEY. AUCKLAND WRITER’S SUCCESS. An honour has been conferred on an Auckland playwright. Mrs. Nello Porter, of Remuera, by the Sydney Repertory Society’s acceptance of her threeact play, “The Spinster Who Spun,” for production this month. Mrs. Porter has been specially invited to Sydney to see the presentation of the play, and she was to leave Wellington by the Wanganella on May 11 for a short visit to Australia, stated the N.Z. Herald. “The Spinster Who Spun” was produced in the Town Hall Concert Chamber in October last year in aid of the St. John Ambulance Association, and proved extremely successful. Its theme, the manner in which an unobtrusive woman helped to sway the fortunes of those around her and eventually find romance itself, was made very convincing by its able and sympathetic characterisations. It was brought under the notice of the Sydney Repertory Society, which is the strongest amateur theatrical body in Australia, and was immediately accepted. In a letter signifying the society’s acceptance, Mrs. Porter was asked to
bring with her any other suitable plays she had written. She intends to submit to the society a three-act play to be entitled either “Out of Yesterday” or 4 ‘The Spider Spins.” Its theme is the machinations of an unscrupulous man and the way in which the reverberations of the past ultimately defeat his plans. Several of Mrs. Porter’s plays have already been produced in Auckland, apart from. “The Spinster Who Spun.” Among these were 4 4 The Goddess of the Punjab.” 44 A Desert Romance” and “The Gipsy Revel.”
