[ Per Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, May 12. ‘•On the eve of my departure for he World Economic Conference,” says the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes in a statement to-day, “I desire to express to my fellow citizens my heartfelt sympathy with them in the serious and difficult time through which they are passing. I realise that there is no household free from anxiety for the future, and that all sections of the community are feeling the strain.” He continued that this position arises out of the catastrophic fall in the world’s markets and says that an improvement in these markets will be immediately reflected in improved conditions in the Dominion. The Conference is meeting for the purpose of devising some plan by which this improvement ean be brought about. As every nation is in the same plight as New Zealand, the issues are too urgent tnd too great for anything but the most serious consideration by the Conference, and every endeavour should be made to prevent selflsh motives from defeating the object for which the Conference has been called. His fervent hope is that the Conference will be a success and that ere long the dark clouds will pass away and the spectre of unemployment be banished from our midst. He fully realised the problems the Government would have to deal with during his absence, but he leaves with the utmost confidence in Mr. Coates and his other colleagues, and knows that the affairs of the Dominion are in competent hands.
