DUNEDIN’S PROBLEM. TACKLING UNEMPLOYMENT. “GET MEN BACK TO INDUSTRIES” DUNEDIN, May 11. Dunedin’s first parson to be elected Mayor, the Rev. E. T. Cox, in outlining hi s policy at the installation ceremony, quoted Italy as an example weher industry was agog with activity under Signor Mussolini, aflo said he proposed to take a census of workshops aud factories to find out the number of people who could be employed with machinery and the number employed to-day. fie als proposed to take a census of trades and industries to discover the trade capacity of the unemployed. “I want to get them back from the shovel,” s»aid the speaker, “into commerce, trade and industry.” To effect his desire, the Mayor said he had to seek the co-operation of the Unemploy-' merit Board, so that they would b< able to use relief labour on construetivf works at standard wages. To intended to ask the council to provide extra rerelief for one month until investigation had been made and the position thoroughly explored. “If we get people working,” he added, “it will mean that the great loss to the city in outstanding rates will cease. We shall insist on the men giving adequate value for each day’s work.” After his installation, Mr. Cox fallowed the time-honoured English cilfi.tom. which is new to Dunedin, of attending public worship. He attended Trinity Church, which is tho mother church of Methodism in Otago.
