SOUTHLAND MEETING CUP TO JACK-A-DANDY DIAMOND JACK’S STEEPLES [ Per Press Association. J INVERCARGILL, May 12. The winter meeting of the South land Racing Club opened to-day L wet weather and the attendance wa only fair. The track was very heavy. The totalisator handled £5929, against £6531 last year. Results: — Trial Handicap, of £SO; six furlongs —4/3 Orderwood (C. Humphries) 3 2/2 Island Linnet (Brodie) 2, 1/Obligement (Elies) 3. Also: 3/4Beam 6/6 Victory Paper, 7/5 Garnish, 5/ Dazzling Eyes, 8/7 Red Tenor. Hal a length each way. Garnish was fourth. Time, 1.22. Orderwood, Oblige ment, Island Linnet and Garnish wer well clear of the others after goint two furlongs, and had the race to themselves, Orderwood staying on bes to beat Island Linnet, the latter out lasting Obligement. Toreador and Mount Boa carried the field along in the early stages, with The Smuggler and Salmo Salar next and Jack-a Dandy last. The order was the same to the straight. Getting an opening at the straight entrance Jack-a-Dandy finished strongly to beat Toreador by a length, with'The Smuggler three quarters of a length back. Then came Salmo Salar. Time, 2.16. In the straight Lochard cut down the leaders aqd beat Venite by three-quarters of a length, with Broughshane one and a-half lengths away and Bed Sunset next. Time, 1.53. Tradesmen’s Handicap, of £100; oni mile.—2/2 Sailing Home (Eastwood; 1, 3/3 Totolomai (Jenains) 2, 1/1 Red Boa (Didham) 3. Also: 8/8 Silver Paper, 7/6 Steeton, 5/5 Royal Duke 4/4 Leading Boy, 6/7 Night Maid. Totolomai and Royal Duke were the early leaders from Sailing Home, Steeton and Bed Boa. Royal Duke re tired at the straight entrance, where Sailing Home put in a claim and beat Totolomai by a head. Red Boa was two lengths away and then came Leading Boy. Time, 1.50 4-5.
