Regarding the question of the pooling of fines discussed at the meeting of delegates hold at Feilding in November last, further representations have been made to the Afinistcr, but nothing has been done. MONETARY REFORM At Tuesday’s meeting of the Alanawatu County Council it was agreed to support a resolution from the Tauranga County Council urging the Government to institute an exhaustive and open enquiry into the matter of monetary reform. Cr. J. IL Perrctt said the question was to be discussed nt tlvforthcoming World Economic Conference, and thought the letter could be held over. The council agreed to support the resolution. RANGITIKEI RIVER BRIDGE The question of registering a protest regarding the Rangitikci River Bridge was brought up by Cr. Boyce. He wished to know if the council intended to take action regarding the class of material used in the existing bridge. The state of the bridge was a serious matter and he was of opinion that some protest should be made. The chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber), asking for a direction as to the attitude the Alanawatu County Council should take up. Cr. J. H. Pcrrett suggested the best thing to do was by way of a deputation and that the chairman should confer with the Rangitikci County Council chairman and arrange for a deputation to wait on the Minister of Public Works. Cr. Barber said he had given the matter very serious thought, and his idea was that the Public Works Do partment should take over the liability of the existing structure and there was also the attitude that the subsidy for the new structure should be substantially increased. It was agreed to forward a letter to the Rangitikci County inviting that body to join in a protest to the Government, and that if the Rangitikci County refuse to join in support of the Alanawatu County, then the Alanawatu County would refuse to have anything to do with the cost of the new bridge. “And we stand firm on that,’’asked Cr. Boyce. “Yes,” answered the chairman, who said his view was that the council should stand firm. ART UNIONS FOR HOSPITAL The question of having art unions for hospital costs was discussed at Tuesday’s meeting of the Alanawatu County. Cr. Perrctt said he failed to see any reason why Hospital Boards should not avail themselves of this means of raising revenue. Other countries were doing so and it was time New Zealand took advantage of it. Cr. Boyce pointed out that hospital charges were now at bedrock and local bodies could not expect any further reductions. The hardship that local bodies were up against is that the hospital levy has to be paid, whether the rates are collected or not. Cr. Aforcom considered that a hospital art union would win universal support and if approved and launched would be the largest art union experiment in the Dominion. It was agreed to fully represent the position to the Palmerston North Hos pital Board, urging that institution to take up the question of launching an art union. LOCAL BODY AMALGAMATION Discussing the recent conference of local bodies to consider the question of amalgamation, Cr. Barber said it seemed the broader view would take time to develop and it appeared it was not the desire to bring about the amalgamation of county councils. Cr Pcrrett said that the trouble was to gel; the conference to consider the national aspect of the question. Cr. Barber said that apparently it was not proposed to urge the ftmnl gam at ion of county councils, but ox pressed the opinion that more would be hoard on the subject.
