TAIHAPE

MAYORAL INSTALLATION The Alayor (Air. L. B. H. de Lau tour), was installed in office on We-, nesday evening in the presence of the newly-elcctcd council and their wives. A number of prominent citizens an their wives were also present for the installation ceremony, which was performed by Cr. Loader. Other councillors present, were Crs. Butler, Darvill, Wilshor, Sinclair, AlacDiarmid. An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Cr. May. Apologies foi being unable to attend the installation ceremony were received from several prominent residents of Taihape. In vesting the Mayor with the robes of office, Or. Loader said ho did so with every confidence in Air. do Lautour. If the Alayor fulfilled his duties as well in the future as he had done in the past, the ratepayers would have no cause for complaint. He could assure His Worship of the co-operation of the council and felt assured tha» Air. do Lautour would uphold the dignitv of his office. In responding, His Worship said that, it had always boon his endeavour to discharge the duties of his office carefully, thoughtfully and to th* best of his ability. He did not think that he had failed in his duty and he thought that the people had no cause for complaint. He hoped that the future would show some bright signs. The affairs of the borough had been very ably administered during the past two years by the council, and he wa> pleased to bo able to report that the finances of the borough at the present time were very satisfactory and much sounder than they were four or five years ago. He had been proud and pleased to work with the council and hoped that the newly-elected councillors would find their term, of office pleasant and profitable, not only to the ratepayers, but to themselves. Ho had endeavoured during the past two years to give the public as much information as possible concerning the finances of the borough and the town clbrk had prepared a comprehensive financial statement each month, setting out in detail the position of the various accounts. 4 ‘The, unemployment problem has been causing us a lot of worry and thought. The local unemployment committee had been very concerned about those who were out of a job and were forced ’to go on relief works at a very small wage. Alen in class B (married men with two children), could only earn £1 5s a week, while those with three or more children received £1 17s 6d a week. The position of these men was exceedingly difficult, 1 as it was almost impossible to live on the wages they received at the present time, and he hoped that the public would support wholeheartedly any function that was organised for the benefit of the unemployed. The Unemployment Board had announced a new scheme providing for increased wages and the supplying of boots *to the unemployed. The. boots would not be supplied free, each unemployed man being required to do a day’s work in return for the boots. Proceeding, Air. do Lautour remarked that ho wished to congratulate electors on the choice of a council and could assure them that their confidence would not bo misplaced and they could be certain that the. affairs of the borough would be administered in a very able manner. BOROUGH AFFAIRS Ajfter each of the newly-elected Borough Councillors had signed the usual declaration on Wednesday evening, His Worship the Mayor (Air. L. B. H. de Lautour), had a few words to say to each. Addressing Cr. Loader, he said that this councillor had a record of which he had every reason to be proud. Cr. Loader had been on the council for 12 years and had never missed a meeting. He had at all times been very attentive to his duties. He had been chairman of the Oval Domain Com mittce when the Oval Domain was re modelled. He had later done excellent work as chairman of the Works Committee. The past two years had been very difficult ones for the Works Committee, but Cr. Loader had come through with colours flying, and had kept below the estimates to the extent of £3OO. He wished Cr. Loader every success in the future. “Cr. Butler has also rendered ex cellcnt service as chairman of the Electric Light Committee and I have every confidence in him,” remarked the Mayor in making reference to Ib. councillor. Referring to Cr. Darvill, His Worship said that he (Cr. Darvill), had been keen, alert and attentive to his duties. The Alayor went on to refer to Cr. Wilshcr as the “rowdy man” of the council. (Laughter). Although the speaker had differed with Cr. Wilshcr on many occasions, tncre had always been good feeling between Cr. Wilsher and himself, and he had always appreciated Cr. Wilshcr’s worth. The Mayor, in addressing Cr. Sinclair, said that he would like to congratulate him on topping the poll. We consider him a “dark horse.’’ The people of Taihape feel proud that there are two medical men on the council and I am sure that these medical men will prove themselves useful councillors,” declared the Mayor. Addressing Cr. AfacDnarmid, the Alayor remarked that lie wished to congratulate him on his public, spirit in coming forward to assist in the work of the town and hoped that lie would have a pleasant term of office. Proceeding, the Mayor expressed pleasure at. the presence of the president of the Taihape Rugby Union (Mr. J. Quirk). He hoped that the Rugby Union would have a successful season. “A good season will help the Rugby Union and it will help the council. The Oval Domain fund is very “sick” at present. The Rugby Union is a. happy body and much credit is due to Air. Quirk for the way he handles his mon,’’ concluded the Mayor. Air. de Lautour informed the meeting that, he had received a note from ex-Counc.illor AlcDonald, wishing the co'.’ncil every success. The Mayor rermiked that he was glad to see. that Mr. end Airs. Dymocfc were present. “I don’t know where the Bank of New Zealand would be if it wasn't for the Borough Council. (Laughter - ). Mr. Dyinock has done « great deal for the (own. and recognition of his ser ' ic.es will be made before he «lc patts,” added His Worship, who als<>|
