DEGREES IN DIVINITY
AUCKLAND APPROVES. AUCKLAND. May 10. The following resolution, moved by the Rev. Dr. H. Ranston, was carried unanimously at a meeting of the Auek[land University College Council: “This [University College Council recommends | the Senate of the University of New Zealand to take such steps as are i necessary to enable it to confer degrees in Divinity/* A month ago a deputation representing the Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, and Congregational Churches waited upon the council and asked that it should approach the Universitv Senate regarding the matter. Members of the council expressed symptahy with the proposal and Dr. Ranston was appointed to draw up a motion for submission to the next meeting. LEGISLATION REQUIRED. DUNEDIN, May 10. A report from Auckland published today states that, on the motion of Dr. Ranston. th** Auckland University Council passed a resolution in favour of bringing before the University Senate the establishment, of degrees in Divinity. Tn connection with this proposal it is recalled 'that some years ago the Senate of the University of New Zealand, on the motion of Sir Thomas Sidey. set up a committee to inquire into this subject, and finally in 19-JO, after the committee ba«l taken evidence in various quarters, its report in favour of the establishment of these degrees was adopted. I To carry this into effect, however, legislative action was required involving an amendment of the New Zealand University Act, and Sir Thomas Sidey again moved at this year’s meeting of the Senate to set up a commit tee to.give the matter further consideration and report to the next meet ing. This report, will be presented ar the meeting of the Senate in February.
