SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS

CRITICISED BY TEACHERS. WELLINGTON, May IL Criticism of primary school text books was made at the New Zealand Educational Institute Conference today. when it was decided to appoint a recess committee to report fully on tho subject to the next annual mooting Mr. W. A. Sproat (Otago) said that the success achieved by any tradesman was due to his skill and his tools of trade; the success achieved by a teacher was due, to his teaching skill and his equipment in tho matter of text books. If the text books wore lacking then the teacher was “cramped” to a considerable extent. There was a feeling of dissastisfaction with tho present text books. Dr. W .1. Boraman (Otago) said that the English text book was a “joke,’ and the ' arithmetic book was littl< better: they wore the despair of the sole teacher. Tho following refliit was adopted:“That in view of the widespread dissatisfaction among teachers in regard to primary school text books, ’ho annual meeting of the N.Z.F.T. sot up a recess committee to report fully to tho next annual mooting, and to make practical recommendations ns to improvements desirable.” It was agreed that the Auckland branch of the institute should form tho committee.
