ABOUT LEGAL TENDER
INTERESTING POSITION. The following is culled from a Home journal: Recently in England two farthings were offered as payment for a stamp at a post office—and were accepted. Legally- they could not be refused. Farthings are, however, rarely seen changing hands for monetary purposes in English country districts. Few people probably, know what legal tender is. Gold if above the least cur rent weight, and Bank of England notes are legal tender for any amount. Silver is legal tender up to a total of £2, but not above. Bronze, including farthings, is legal tender up to a shilling. But in these hard times he would be a very legal-minded tradesman, indeed, who would refuse payment of his, bills in any kind of currency. It may not be generally known that no one can be compelled under ary statute to give change. It is only a moral obligation.
