REPERTORY THEATRE MOVEMENT
yn i: effort now being made in Wanganui to promote a. Repertory Theatre, is a movement to be encouraged. Not only does the production of plays provide a very pleasant recreation, but. there are some very decided cultural gains to be made thereby. While .it is, perhaps, not to be desired that people should engage in the drama for anything more than the play—the play’s the thing—nevertheless, the fact that other favourable factors are present, need not he overlooked nor ignored. The play introduces the reader to good English, which is lively because it has to be spoken; it compels the actor to study character; it necessitates attention Io such important things as clear enunciation and proper accent in speech, and what is equally important, although often overlooked, deportment. The ability to appear before an audience without being disconcerted by nervousness is also a possession worth gaining, and they arc all by-products of acting. It is seldom that capital fun provides such excellent interest returns.
