HALT CALLED
TRAINING OF TEACHERS MINISTER’S STATEMENT NO MORE TILL 1335 WELLINGTON, May 9. An announcement that no more teachers will be trained in the training colleges before 1935 was made to-day by the Minister of Education (the Hon. K. Masters), in an interview with a Post reporter. Mr. Masters said that he had investigated very carefully the question of the appointment of probationers iu 1934, and regretted that he had to come to the conclusion that it will nol be necessary to begin training teachers in the training colleges before 1935. ‘'The number of unemployed teachers, together with the Government Statis tician’s estimate that there will be a considerable decrease in the next three or four years in the number of children between five and fourteen years of age, makes it evident that tho present supply is sufficient for the requirements of the service until 1936, ” said tho Minister. “No probationers will therefore be appointed in 1934; but in 1935 a number of students will be admitted to the training colleges to meet the requirements of the schools from the beginning of 1937.’’ TRAINING COLLEGE CLOSING AT CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. • It is understood that the Christchurch Training College will be closed at the end of this year. Since the admission of probationers was stopped at the beginning of 1931, the only teachers in training this year are seeond-year, third-year and graduate students. These will all have finished their courses at fhe end of the year, and since, according to the Minister’s statement, no new students will be admitted until 1935, it is regarded as certain that the col lege will be closed at least temporarily.
