The committee set up as a result of the conference to find an angle of approach, to a settlement, met in the morning and afternoon and again they adjourned. They will meet again at 9 to-morrow. Nothing of a definite nature resulted from to-day’s meetings. The waterfront was very quiet, the interisland ferries running according to schedule and without incident. The Wangauella also arrived. The only other arrival was the scow Echo, which left V. eilingtou on Saturday for Blenheim with a new crew and arrived back here early this morning with no cargo. The vvatersiders refused to work her. The Barbour Board to-day commenced the construction of a strong barricade on the Thorn don breastwork. There are uo gates at. that portion ci the waterfront. The remainder of the wharves can be shut off by gates. The waterside workers also met the employers to-day. No statement was made available, but it is understood that they discussed, the working of the ships manned by non-union labour. The watersiders so far have refused to work ships not manned by union crews. MAUNGANUI’S CARGO WILL WATERSIDERS WORK IT? SYDNEY. May 9. The Maunganui will berth at Daring Harbour upon arrival to-morrow. Loading operations depend on the attitude taken by the Seamen’s Union and the Waterside Workers’ Federation. Union officials will not make any statement as to the policy these bodies intend to adopt, and are not prepared to indicate whether they intend to support the action of the New Zealand seamen.
