Unemployed Land Settlement
According to advice received in Wanganui yesterday, application forms for the inclusion of unemployed men in the land settlement scheme are being sent out to the post offices and Labour Department offices throughout the Dominion. It is stated that a certain amount of confusion has existed with regard to the manner of making the application. Sinking of Lusitania Last Sunday was the eighteenth anniversary of the sinking during the Great War of the Cunard Line steam ship Lusitania. The Lusitania was sunk in 13 minutes by a German sub marine shortly after 2 p.m. on May 1915, when she was travelling at a speed of IS knots ton miles off the Old Head of Kinsale, the south-east tip of Ireland. The deaths numbered 1198. Hoardings to Firewood. For some time the Vacuum Oil Company Proprietary Limited, have been dimantling their Plume and Mobiloil roadside hoardings to assist in the campaign launched by His Excellency the Governor-General, which has for its object the removal of advertisement hoardings which detract from the natural beauty of New Zealand country roads. A large number of those hoardings are being broken up and the timber delivered to deserving families for fuel. The addresses are obtained by the company from various charitable organisations who are extremely grateful for the free distribution of firewood, and hope that this thoughtful action by the Vacuum Oil Company will be followed by other firms who have similar material available. Wanganui Man’s Enthusiasm “This is the greatest treat 1 have had south of the Line,” was the com meat of the judge of the vocal and instrumental section, Mr. F. Went worth Slater, of Wanganui, when referring to the chief piano solo, .the final of which he judged, at the annual festival of the Christchurch Competitions Society, on Friday, says a Chri' t church paper. He added that he could have sat for a month and listened to the competitors, and would travel miles to hear them. “Christchurch and New Zealand should bo proud of them." he said. Commenting on the vocal section, ho said that the com petit ors did not enter into the spirit of the song with as much zest as they might. “Soak yourselves into the words of the song,” was his advice. The moiooy, after all, was a secondary consideration.
