Features of Saturday’s racing at Hawera were the easy win of the Wan-ganui-owned Ganpat in the Manawapou Hurdles, the excellent dividends returned by La Crown and Gibraltar in the Shorts Handicap and the Davidson Handicap respectively, and the easy win registered by British Columbia in the open sprint. It was also very gratifying to find the totalisator showing an increase over last year’s total, and this in spite of the unavoidable postponement of the meeting. Though none of the seven contestants in the Manawapou Hurdles gave anything like a decent display of jumping, Ganpat had too much pace for the rest and won in hollow style. Passing the stands the first time Ganpat was six lengths ahead of Green Linnet, with a gop of four lengths back to Invictus, who was followed by Easterly and High Falutin’. The last-named made up his leeway quickly along the back stretch and turned for home a couple of lengths behind Ganpat, with Easterly next, and a gap back to Invictus. Ganpat then ran home an easy winner, with High Falutin* beating Easterly fairly comfortably, showing improvement on his first day’s display.

Two Hawera-trained contestants had the finish of the Ngamutu Hack Handicap to themselves, March Alone beating Tentcall by less than a length. King Win. pulling hard all the way, (showed

the way out of the stroignr to Tentcall, Giowlight, Beaconsfield, and Arikitea. King Win was still in front as they swung round the bend for the run to the judge, but over the concluding stages Tentcall had his measure, only to succumb to March Alone’s challenge.

The Adamson Steeplechase. With only five contesting the Adamson Steeplechase the event was not so spectacular as could have been wished. However, Fine Acre provided some compensation for trainer A. M. Wright, who has temporarily lost the services of Okopua. At the stand double Fine Acre was three lengths ahead of Jen. Jayson and Day Lass, with Hard Gold following after an interval. Jen was up with Fine Acre at the sod-wall, three fences from home, but lost his rider, and Jayson joined the leader. The pair came over the last obstacle together, two lengths ahead of Day Lass, but Fine Acre was too good for Jayson on the flat. British Columbia made amends for his recent defeats by winning the Mokia Handicap from his three opponents, of whom Arvada caught the tapes at barrier-rise but after all was no good in the heavy going. British Columbia had a break of two and a-half lengths on Royal Bengal on the turn into the straight, with Little Doubt three lengths back, this having been the order throughout. British Columbia was not seriously troubled to hold off Royal Bengal. There were eleven starters in the Shorts Handicap, and the winner turned up in the little-fancied La Crown. The Lackham filly was first out from the tapes, being followed over the initial stages by Forceful, Beaconfire, Lapstone and Merry Way There was not much alteration on the turn, but Beaconfire made up some of his leeway to challenge La Crown in the run home. The leader was going well, however, to win nicely, while Amyril finished best of the others to return a decent 44 place” dividend. Instalment, Merry Way, Forceful, Diagano, and Huanui were in a bunch, next. Gibraltar’s Improvement. With young Duncan in the saddle instead of Wiggins, Gibraltar showed improvement on his first day’s display to win the Davidson Handicap, his win dividend being not far short of a score. Davistock piloted Lady Quex, Scatown, Gibraltar, Awaken and Alloy out of the straight. Gibraltar replaced Seatown in third berth down the back and followed Davistock into the straight. Once they straightened up Seatown and Alloy joined in and the four had a great fight all the way to the judge, Gibraltar getting the verdict over Seatown by the narrowest of margins, with Davistock a neck away and Alloy half a length further back.

Slippery was trailing the Borough ack Handicap field at the five furlongs, Tentcall, St. Clara, Miss Cavendish, Prince Reno and lilla Quex being the early order, but at the straight entrance the favourite was just behind Lalla Quex, with St. Clara still two lengths ahead. A great finish was staged. Slippery getting up in time to win by half a head from Lalla Quex. with St. Clara, a big outsider, in third place. Prince Reno, Tentcall, Illuminate and Chief Line were next to finish.
