WHITE MARBLE BAX'

DISPUTE OVER MEMORIAL A dispute over a proposed 6ft. tun. by 3ft. marble monument to a wife and child in Little Gaddesden churchyard was argued in the St. Albans cousin lory court lately. Canon Barkley, the icctur, had advised Mr. Geoffrey Buurkc Cuthbertson to abandon marble in favour of local stone. Mr. Cuthbertson, however, objected to granite. Counsel (for Mr. Cuthbertson) said: “Taking advantage uf a national ; emergency and the cry ‘Buy British.’ people advocated that no more white marble should be- used in churchyards. To suggest that white marble, the medium of all the greatest sculptors, is unsuitable is to take up a position absolutely untenable. Nothing could be more symbolical of purity.” The Chancellor pointed out. that the Central Council for tho Care of Churches condemned “glaring splashes of white.” He held that the rector had properly exercised his discretion It was stated there would be an up peal.
