WAVERLEY
ANZAC SERVICE Some three hundred Waverley residents gathered at the Town Hall last Tuesday afternoon, when a commemoration service was held by Rev. H. Stuart and Rev. S. Gardiner. Boy Scouts and returned soldiers parade! and impressed once more on others attending the force of active service for country. Following the service at the hall, a procession was formed and marched to the Memorial Clock Tower, where wreaths were placed and the “Last Post” sounded. Rev. Stuart gave an inspiring address, stressing the need for those in the world to-day carrying on the work begun by those who gave their lives in the Great War. They won through then, but there was a still greater task before us now, which would eventually be overcome too by the combined force of every individual. No individual could say he was leading an independent life. By that he was shirking his responsibilities, and denying the fact that everyone’s life was inextricably linked to that of his fcllowmcn. By shouldering all responsibilities, the task begun in 1914-18 with huge sacrifice, could be won through. “And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise; God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.” The Dead March from “Saul” was playod by Mr. W. J. Muir, bringing the service to a conclusion. RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION There was only a small attendance for the annual meeting of the Waverley Returned Soldiers’ Association held on Tuesday afternoon, following the service. Dr. P. V. Graves presided, and business was transacted quickly on the usual formal lines, the annual report and balance-sheet being received and adopted. The balancesheet showed a credit which .was satisfactorily commented on by members. The election of officers for another year resulted in the same office-bear-ers being returned, with the addition of Mr. It. H. Blackiston as a committee member.
RUGBY FOOTBALL Rugby football is being taken an interest in this season in the AVavcrIcy district to a greater extent than former years, and from present aspects the winter should provide players with all they could -want in sport. Although the annual meeting was held only last Thursday, there has been one sub-union conypetition match played al readv' by the AVaverley Club, this being on the AVaverley grounds between AVaverley and Ngutuwcra, the former winning by 25 to nil. At the annual meeting last Thurs day there was an excellent attendance of both new and intending members, and the impression gained was that the season would be a keen one. Annual report and balance-sheet were presented by the secretary and adopted, the balance-sheet showing a small credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Air. H. James; president, Air. A. E. Symes; vice-presidents, Alessrs. Thomas, Old, C. E. Johnston, Alex. Ehnslic, Brown, AV. Alorrison, J. E. Palmer and C. Austin; secretary, Air. J. Practice night was fixed as Thursday night of each week, while subscriptions were decided upon as the same as last year, payable before the second playing Saturday. Air, J. Alills’ donation of a new football was accepted -with thanks. Waverley v. Ngutuwera Play was very bright in the match against Ngutuwera last Saturday considering the rough conditions and the handling of the Waverley backs indicated strict training. Ngutuwera fielded a solid pack of forwards, but the backs were weak, with the exception of Purnell, who played a dependable and, once or twice, brilliant, game. Tries for Waverley were scored by Carey (3), Cunningham, AlcClcnaghan, Fitzgibbon, the latter converting three and AValker one.
