THE MARTON RACES

CALLAMART’S STEEPLES HURDLES TO EASTERLY COPPER KING, FAIRWAY, ARVADA (By “Kestrel.”) In spite of a blustery wind which made conditions rather unpleasant for patrons, there was a satisfactory attendance yesterday at the Marton Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, the “gate’* showing a decided increase on last year’s figures. Only one light shower fell during the afternoon, but heavy rain fell just after the last race, which was run about half an hour late in a bad light. The win and place totalisator had its popularity demonstrated to a marked •legrec, £5734 being handled, as compared with £4106 at the autumn meeting twelve month* ago, the increase of £1628 being equivalent to 40 per cent, of the 1932 total. In view of the large dividend on the first event and the success of comparative outsiders in three events, this must be considered eminently satisfactory. One of .the most popular events of the day was the autumn Hack Plate, in which last year’s winner, Fairway, was again successful. In congratulating Mr. M. Millar, the owner, on Fairway’s success, the club’s president, Mr. R. E. Beckett, recalled last year’s result and said that it was indeed pleasing to see the Palmerston North sportsman having his share of the luck of the game. In accepting the handsome canteen of utlery donated by Messrs. James Buchanan and Co., distillers, for the inner. Mr. Millar said it was a plea- » to race a horse at the Marton ev Club’s meeting. principal event, so far as jumpents were concerned, was the <»n Steeplechase, which was won the favourite, Callamart, after an •iteresting display of ’chasing. None »f the seven contestants failed to negotiate tho course, though a couple of them were a long way behind the place-getters. Easterly won the Club Hurdles in convincing style after a recruit to the game in Ruanui had made the pace a solid one. Another newcomer in High Faintin’ was going well when he had his chance interfered with when Consent dropped back. Copper King won the Crofton Handicap in hollow fashion to return an excellent dividend. Arvada scored a con vincing win in the open sprint, while Saltspray sprang a decided surprise when he led the Novice Stakes field home, returning a dividend of just on 'wo score. The finest finish of the day was reserved for the last race, in which the judge, Mr. A. Tronson, was unable to separate Koya! Hunting and Hunting Lodge and declared a dead-heat.

Saltspray’s Big Surprise. Arctic Region was a false favourite for the Novice Stakes, the winner turning up in the little-fancied Saltspray, with another outsider in War Eagle second and a still bigger outsider in Etiquette third. Etiquette was smartest out from the tapes, being followed by Golden Empire, Royston, Clarion Call, Hawora and Boon. Saltspray soon ran up to the leader and the pair came round the turn together, clear of Boon, with a gap back to Arctic Region, War Eagle, Valdarado and Stadium. Saltspray did best in the run home to win nicely by two lengths and a half from War Eagle, who was half a length in front of Etiquette. Mercian Prince, finishing fast, was a neck away, and Boon, Vaidarado and Chaste next.

Easy For Easterly. Adventus, Easterly and Consent were evenly backed in the Club Hurdles, with < -rnsent the actual favourite on tho straight-out machine. Ruanui and Consent set out to make the pace and Ruanui was ten lengths ahead of Consent passing the stands the first time, with Adventus, Invictus. Orby’s Choice. Fine Acre and Easterly. Down the back High Falutin’ ran up fast and was with Adventus as they approached the hurdle five furlongs from home. Here Consent ran down the obstacle and caused High Falutin’ to lose a lot of ground. Invictus joined Ruanui crossing the top and the pair were first into the straight, four lengths ahead of Fine Aero and Adventus. with Easterly commencing a run. Invictus had the lead as they got over the last hurdle but Easterly swept up and came on to win by three lengths from Invictus. Fine Acre was two lengths back, and then came Ruanui and Adventus, with a gap back to High

Copper King Wins Handicap. Chopin was the elect of backers for the Crofton Handicap but the winner turned up in Copper King at a good price. Copper King and La Poupee were slow to move and Juggle at once set out to force the pace, with Nightmare, La Poupee, Habit and Spearful, with Copper King next. At the five furlongs Copper King was up behind Jaysou and La Poupee, with Arrow Lad and Nightmare next. Copper King headed Juggle across the top, with Habit, La Poupee and Chopin next. Going on with it over the final stages Copper King was six lengths ahead at the finish, uith Habit beating Juggle by a length for second money. Chopin was fourth and Spearful followed after a gap.

Callamart and Okopua. Callamart was a firm favourite for the Marton Steeplechase and duly won in a good finish with Okopua. The first time over the double brush in front of the stands Pangolin was showing the way to Omeo. Jayson, Callamart and Okopua, but before they came round again Omeo was piloting Okopua, Pangolin, Callamart and Hard Gold. Five furlongs from home Okopfia and Callamart were ten lengths ahead of Jayson, Omeo and Day Lass. The pair cleared out from the field over the final stages and had an interesting duel in which Callamart gained the verdict by half a length. Jayson was twenty lengths away, third,

just in front of Omeo. The other pair finished at intervals. Fairway Scores Again. Fairway, last year’s winner of the Autumn Hack Plate, was installed favourite and duly won from Beaconsfield, second in request. Ida Merling showed the way out of the straight to Beaconsfield, Chief Marionette, Beryl Latour, Davistock. and King Win. Going down the back Ida Merling was clear of Beaconsfield, Da- • vistock, Chief Marionette, Beryl Latour, Jazz King and Fairway, but the favourite made a fast run approaching the top and was not far behind Ida Merling, Beaconsfield and Chief Marionette as they swung round the turn, with Davistock, Beryl Latour and King Win next. Once straightened up Fairway asserted his claim and won with ease by two lengths from Beaconsfield, who was half a length in front of Ida Merling. King Win was only a neck behind the third horse, with Davistock and Beryl Latour nearest of the others. Arvada Beats Navaho. Farmer and Navaho shared favouritism in the Flying Handicap but Arvada w on at a long price. Both Arvada and Navaho were slow to move when the tapes went up and Aston showed the way to Leisure. Knollmere and False Scent. Navaho made up leeway fast and at the halfmile was just behind Aston and Leisure, with Farmer, Knollmere, False Scent and Arvada the order of the others. On the turn for home Navaho was challenging Aston, with Knollmere, Farmer, Leisure and Arvada nearest, but Arvada finished best to win, going away, by half a length from Navaho, who beat Farmer by a neck. Leisure was close up, fourth. Deat-Heat in Last Race. Royal Hunting was the favourite for the concluding event but had to be content to share the honours with Hunting Lodge in a dead-heat. The race was run in semi-darkness but Hunting Lodge, Slippery, Moorwyn, Royal Hunting, Minstrel Lad and Lapstone were first to sort themselves out. Slippery and Hunting Lodge piloted the field across the top, followed by Lapstone, Pladie and Royal Hunting. The last-named put in his claim at the distance and Hunting Lodge hung on well, the pair crossing the line on terms, half a length in front of Chief Marionette. Pladie, Lapstone, King Peg and Slippery w ere next to finish.
