TIMBER INDUSTRY
WHITE PINE ORDERS REDUCED. WEST .COAST MILLS CLOSING The demand for white pine, xvliich has not been over-brisk, has slackened considerably on the west coast of the ■South Island during the past few weeks. Orders are getting very scarce and already some of the mills have been closed, while others will probably be closed shortly. The timber industry, especially with rimu, has been passing through a quiet period and there does not seem to be any prospect of an early improvement. Only comparatively a small percentage of the mills will bo affected by the slackness in the white pine market as few of the mills have white pine to cut. Practically all of the timber that has been exported to Australia for some time has been white pine, and the present slackness, which is not expected to show any improvement until July, will affect considerably the earning of the Greymouth waterside workers.
