PACIFIC ISLANDS TOUR

GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S VISIT NO EXPENSE TO PUBLIC PURSE [ Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 7. The new headquarters of the Wellington branch of the St. John Ambulance Association, was officially opened to-night by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, who paid a warm tribute to the association. Lord. Bledisloe referred to the visit to the Pacific Islands of himself and Lady Bledisloe. He said it was Hi* Majesty’s expressed desire that ho should do this soon after coming to New Zealand, but the exigencies o‘ ; public affairs within the Dominion and the stringency of the national finance had hitherto rendered such a visit im practicable. But for an arrangement which, at his suggestion, had been arrived at with the Naval Department, enabling them to travel on board a cruiser in the course of her annual Pacific Cruise, this lifting the entire expense from the public purse, they would have been unable during His Excellency’s period of office to visit the oceanic portion of his administrative area. These were the sole reasons for visiting ths islands in a battleship. Lord Bledisloe added that he proposed to appoint the Chief Justice as his deputy in his absence
