"THE GREATEST OF THESE— "

THEATRES AND CHARITY. WANGANUI'S APPRECIATION. IFn more ways than one have the , j Wanganui theatres responded to the appeals made on behalf of those in distress, and if a record were made of all that has been done in the past decade for the ’cause of charity their deeds would make a lengthy budget. The innovation of Saturday morning matinees with “gift” admission for •patrons caught on last year when the Majestic and Regent Theatres ran a successful “produce” matinee. On that occasion two lorry loads of vegetables, fruit and farm produce were distributed among the needy of Wanganui, and the two theatres provided their generous patrons with a generous programme of entertainment. The distribution of the produce was on equally generous lines, as befitted the wish of tho donors. Quite recently the Regent and the Majestic Theatres once more pooled their resources in a similar cause, but on this occasion it was decided that, the appeal be for groceries and similar provender, the plentiful supply of vegetables ensuring that Wanganui families would be well supplied in that respect. In spite of the fact that the bulk of these gifts did not make so spectacular a display as did the huge pumpkins and other vegetables of last year’s matinee, a large lorry loaded with foodstuffs was available for distribution. This task was undertaken by the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Committee, ami distribution uf tho greater part has been effected. Appreciation of th© theatres’ goner ous assistance was expressed at a meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund earlier this week. “The action of these two theatre’ is a most generous one,” commented the Mayor, Air. N. G. Armstrong, tn moving that letters of thanks be for warded to the. management of the re spcctive theatres. I
