CATHOLIC MISSION

SOCIAL EVILS OF THE DAY i’rior to the sermon on the “Holly Sacrifice of the Mass,” preached by the Rev. Father T. J. AlcCarthy, >.AL. in St. Alary’s Church last night, Rev. Father P. Kane, S.M., made the following statement concerning his scr mon on the “Social Evils of th© Dav.”* He said; “In reference to the sermon on “Social Evils of the Dny, I made the following statement when speaking of preventatives: “In this matter many chemist shops arc simply the workshops of the Devil.” Two ol your local chemists called on me this morning and considered that they wen placed under a cloud by that statement. I. pointed out to them that the word “many” was purposely chosen and could not by any stretch of the imagination mean “all,” just as when referring to doctors in this ami in other matters, 1 referred only to those who were thus prostituting their noble profession. Needless to say, I wadelighted to receive the assurance ot those two gentlemen that they an I any whom they represented did n"t lower their profession by dealing m preventatives. I congratulated them. Nevertheless, my statement stands be cause it is true and T repeat i<: “Many chemist shops are simply tho workshops of tho Devil.”
