JUBILEE CELEBRATION
PETONE CENTRAL SCHOOL. The Petone Central School, formerly known as the Petone State School, completed its 50th year recently. The school was founded in 1882 and during the past 50 years has achieved a wonderful record both in sport and scholastic attainments. The records reveal that the institution was responsible for the primary and secondary education of over 10,000 scholars, many of whom are to-day well known and distinguished figures in commercial and other enterprises. It has been decided to hold the Jubilee celebrations during the forthcoming Easter holidays, and a strong and enthusiastic committee is now busy finalising arrangements covering a comprehensive programme. Every endeavour has been made to get into personal touch with ex-pupils living in various parts of the Dominion, and already there is abundant evidence that many of these intend to be present at the functions to revive memories and associations of their early youth. The programme commences on Easter Saturday with a welcome at the school by the Mayor of Petone, Mr. David , 'McKenzie, followed by afternoon tea in the school grounds, and a social and dance in the evening. On Easter Sunday, church parades of ex-scholars will be held at the various churches, special services being conducted in honour of the occasion by the resident clergy.
Easter Monday will be devoted to a parade and sports programme at the Petone Recreation Ground, when the present scholars will be entertained, the proceedings to conclude with a banquet and dance for ex-scholars in the Oddfellows’ Hall. As there is every indication from enquiries at present being received that the local accommodation will be taxed to the utmost ,intending visitors should make early applications either to the chairman of the Entertainment Committee, Mr. J. C. Burns, Headmaster, Petone West School, or to the secretary, Mr. J. R. Hollick, at Petone, who will supply information and further particulars on request. It is proposed to issue a souvenir booklet during the jubilee celebrations, outlining the record of the school and illustrated with photographs covering the early history of the town and other items of local interest.
