THE MAYORAL CONTEST
MR. W. ROGERS WITHDRAWS BOWS TO MEDICAL ADVICE. MR. J. ROBERTSON MAY STAND. Mr. W. J. Rogers, on account of health reasons, will not contest the Wanganui Mayoralty, nominations for which close on April 20. The Labour Representation Committee has asked Mr. J. Robertson, who is a member of tho present City Council, to stand and he has asked foe time to consider the matter. Mr. Rogers, when approached by his supporters some time ago, consented to stand, but his medical advisers have indicated that it would not be in the best interests of his health to undergo the strain of another election. Accordingly. he sought permission to with 4 draw his consent to nomination. Members of tho Representation Committee strongly urge! him to reconsider the matter, but in view of the independent advice tendered by several doctors, he felt that he could not accede to his party’s request, much as he would have liked to do. He has consented to stand for another term on the Hospital Board, however, a position he has filled for nearly six years. He will be unable to nominate for a seat on tho Harbour Board, on which he has represented the city for nearly ten years. It was with great reluctance that the Labour Representation Committee accepted Mr. Rogers’ withdrawal from tho Mayoral contest and a resolution was minuted on Saturday placing on record its deep sense of appreciation of the fact that, at tho outset, when Mr. Rogers consented to accept nomination, he had been actuated by a strong sense of duty to the Labour movement and not for personal reasons. A unanimous decision to offer nomination to JSTr. J. Robertson was made and he will g.’vfe his answer within the course of a. few days.
