DESPERATE STRUGGLES
CONSTABLE AND MAORI YOUTH [ Per Press Association.] WHANGAREI, March 20. A report from Rawcne states that a Maori youth, Tee Henarc, held for some days on a charge of forging and uttering, effected his escape from the lock-up early on Saturday by cutting a hole in the wall with a. crudely constructed chisel. A constable spent all day combing the hills in the vicinity of Hokianga Harbour, eventually locating Henare in a house at Motukiore, where desperate struggles ensued, during which the escapee secured a gun, which he presented at his pursuer and broke away. In order to keep on the trail the constable swam across the river at 1 a.m. yesterday and again encountered his quarry at Kohukohu. He succeeded in overpowering him after another strenuous bout. Henare is being charged at the Rawene Court to-day.
