THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

The sowing and planting out of all heat-loving plants should no longer be delayed. Such varieties as haricot and lima beans, egg plants, chilies, Cape gooseberries and others may be planted in well-prepared soil. During the summer deep hoeing or light digging plays an important part in the cultivation of vegetable crops. Mulching is, of course, the best moans of retaining moisture, but failing this a nice loose surface is the best method of practice. Earth up peas, beans, cabbage and potatoes. Spray the latter occasionally as they advance in growth. Also spray tomatoes. Trenches should be prepared for planting out a row or two of celery and also leeks for early use. Even for later planting it is well to have tho trenches manured and prepared. Look over melons, cucumbers, marrows, etc., and fill up any failure by sowing moje seeds. Thin the more advanced plants, leaving two or three of the strongest to each plot. To maintain a supply of salad plants make small sowings of lettuce in wellmanured ground about every three weeks. Sow radishes, mustard and cress at fortnightly intervals. Scarlet and other runner beans are now running rapidly and may need some attention in training the runners up to their supports. Make further sowings of dwarf and runner beans.
