Ted Cheers Up The Chums

The Chiuns’ holidays were drawing rapidly to a close. Richard, Bolly, Gwe<n an< Philip were sitting rather disconsolately on a rock, wishing holidays would last for ever, when Ted came along. “You all look very miserable,” he said. “I think I’ll have to do somethong ot cheer you up.” “Go ahead,” cried Richard.

Ted’s idea to cheer the (’hums up was a game they had played before with great success. It was a treasure hunt. Polly, Richard and Gwen were frightfully keen. “Now,” said Ted, “in this box is a meat patty. I'm going to hide it, and the one who solves the most clues wins. It’s a lovely patty.” “Good,” cried Richard “I’m fond of patties. Go ahead, and hide it.**

The Chums waited patiently by the sea, while Ted went away, hid the box containing the patty, and marked the elucs. ... ... .u“Now,” said Teel, when he was quite ready, “the first clue I have written on the ciin at the back of the bathing huts. It is a very simple one, so who ever wants to win the patty will have to solve it quickly.”

“There you arc,” said Ted. "There's the first clue. It is very easy, so see who can guess it first.” “X comes away very easily,” read Richard. “I don’t sec any sense at al in that.” “Nor I,” said Gwen. "How can a cross come away very easily. Ted has given them quite a puzzle, hasn’t he? Can you solve it?

Have you solved the puzzle? By the look on Polly’s face I fancy she found little difficulty. “Ah! ah!” she laughed. “It is really very simple. If you t*ke the first letter of each word, you spell ‘cave ’ ” “Good gracious,” cried Richard, ‘‘why didn’t I sec that? But what about the cross.”’ So Polly won the first round, you see.

Here you see Hie clue in the cave marked with a cross. Gwen found it first “Here you are,” she cried. "My!” said Richard, "this one is a teaser.—A letter ‘T." a House, a hand—and Ted has actually drawn Polly on the wall.’ “What impudence!” said Polly. Now who can solve this clue? Wc will lcavs the chums hard at it.
