AID FOR THE HOME DRESSMAKER

UNPICKING AN OLD FROCK. Half the joy of making your own clothes lies in saying about the latest creation: “It didn’t cost me a penny; 1 made it out of last year’s frocks.’’ But. the unpicking of the frock is a real business. It is a trial to avoid cutting the material, and a bore to undo seam by seam. To do away with most of this trouble, you should invest in a special “unpicker.’’ which is a flatfish affair with a wide blade, Lt works with a grip held in the left hand to keep the scam steady, while the right hand neatly rips the stitching apart. When the blade edge becomes blunt, a fresh one can be slipped in, the cover coining away on the turning of two screws. As the contrivance costs less than a third of the amount charged for a pair of ordinary scissors, there is no excuse for not possessing it. The present fashion for binding the necks, sleeves and flounces of dresses call for one of the neat, little steel fittings for slipping on to one blade of the cutting-out scissors. This can be adjusted to register the width you want for the crossway strips. You then keep its outer edge along the edge of the material to act as guide to the scissors as you run them along, and the strips come out beautifully straight and even in width.
