WANGANUI COMPETITION RESULTS AND COMMENTS Judging of the entries in the cotta?# garden competition held by the Wanganui Suburban Horticultural Society ‘was finalised yesterday. There were more entries than for tho previous competition. The winner of this year’s contest was Air J. IL Abercrombie, 14 Willis Street. He secured 83 points out of the possible 100. Mrs C. R. Sewell, 17 Gonvillc Avenue, gained secon# place. The judge, Mr J. Cameron, who is a landscape gardener, was strict in his marking, in order to show for future contests where improvement might be made. This year’s competition was for gardens up to a quarter of an acre, but it is thought with the growth of the contest that future competitions might necessarily lie extended to make them open to all gardens. Next year it is hoped that prizes might be given for the winners in the different sections. In commenting on Air J. H. Aberrrombio’s garden the judge said that the front portion was neat and tidy. It did not prepare one for the love.v picture the garden presented at the rear of the section. With more attention to the cultivation of vegetables the garden should sot a high standard for tho future. Out of a possible 20 points for taste and design and general |lay-out of the garden ATr Abercrombie was allotted 19, tfie, section being termed very good, while tho arrangement was excellent. There was a slight lack of balance in the front. Out of tho same possible number of points for cultivation and maintenance, 19 were awarded. That section was termed as being neat and tidy, showing that constant attention had boon given. Tn the flower section, 30 points being the possible, 25 points were given. The judge said that the collection was good and the plants well grown. The garden was given 20 points out of 30 for vegetables, the remarks being that the collection was good, but some lacked quality. The points awarded, with tho judge’s remarks on the, different sections in other gardens were:— Airs C. R. Sewell, 17 Gonvillc Avenue; Total points 81; taste and design, 18 points; general plan, good and showing some pleasing features; cultivation and maintenance. IS, 'clean and good: flowers, 25, good collection and wed grown; vegetables. 20. well grown, fair collection, but with a larger collection would have been placed first. Airs Latham, 4 Rangitikci Street: Total points, 79; taste and design, 15, fair; cultivation and maintenance, 19, good, especially of vegetables; flowers, 15, fair; vegetables, 30, excellent. Air C. Tarrant, 20 Alexander Strtet: Total points 78; taste and design, 14, fair; cultivation and maintenance, 16, good; flowers. 20, quantity but quality not high; vegetables, 28, (collection very good and well grown. Air C. S. Swan, 33 College Street: Total points 78; taste and design, 18, general effect good but marred by a large tree at the corner of the path; cultivation and maintenance, 17, good; flowers, 24, collection good, but lacking in quality of flowers; vegetables, 19, small collection, but what there was well grown. The garden has good potentialities. Airs G. V. Cooke, 7 Sedgebrook Street: Total points, 78; taste and design, 17, good; cultivation and maintenance, 17, good; flowers, 24, collection and quality good; vegetables, 20, well grown but small (collection owing to lack of space. Mr R. Firth, 50 Bell Street: Total points 75; taste and-design, 15 points, good potentialities; cultivation and maintenance, 16, good; flowers, 23, collection good, well grown, with several novelties giving added interest; vegetables, 21, collection fair, quality varied, but on the whole good. The most is made of all available space in this garden. Airs Afcßie 320 Victoria Avenue: I otal points, 73; taste and design, 13, fair, the effect being .spoiled by iron along the boundary hedge; cultivation and maintenance, 14, fair; flowers, 21, collection fair; vegetables, 25, collection fair, and well grown.
