FOUR AIDS TO SUCCESS

NEEDS OF A COUNTRY FALLACY OF LAND VALUES. “There are four things that make for the wealth, might and power of a country,” said Cr. J. Cameron, at the Wai* totara County Council meeting yesterday, when re-valuation of land was the subject under discussion. He enumerated them as follows: (1) Productivity and fertility of the soil. (2) Climate. 3. The moral character of a country’s people. (4.) The wisdom of its leaders. “Wo have the first two in New Zealand,” he continued, “but the character of the people is being destroyed by the fictitious values of land. Our leaders have not shown over great wisdom in their administration of the country and. in support of that, there is the fact that a housewife, if she has half a dozen hens and a rooster (why the rooster should be mentioned in this argument I don’t know) and those fowls lay more eggs than the family can cope with she can’t sell any without a license. That comc« of the wisdom of our leaders. A voice: No; the Poultry Association. Cr. Cameron maintained that everything should be done to bring the valuation of land down and the reduction process should be fair and equitable. It was desirous that the selling value of land should be done away with and the improvements a farmer put on to the land.
