NERVOUS JAPAN

MANY PRECAUTIONS AMERICANS SUSPECT. KOBE, Out. 18. Extraordinary precautions arc being taken against espionage in Japan. Americans are being singled out for special attention by the Japanese detective force. A month ago executives of the Tokio branch of the Bank of New York were refused permission to send to their head office pictures of Japan for use in advertising propaganda. The latest step in the campaign occurred when a party of bank officials on an excursion by car to Kyoto were escorted throughout their holiday by detectives, who prevented any photographs being taken. Their car was boarded soon after the start of the holiday, and they were handed over to other parties at various stages of the journey. Diplomatic pressure is to be brought to bear in order to case the situation.
