OBITUARY
FIELD-MARSHAL METHUEN Received Oct. 31. 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 31. The death is announced of FieldMarshal Lord Methuen at the age of Field-Marshal Lord Paul Sandford, Methuen, G.C.8.. G.C.M.G., G.C.V.0., LL.D., was born in 1845. and was a son of the second Baron Methuen. He was educated at, Eton and was appointed to a lieutenancy in the Scots Guards in 1864. He saw special service on the Gold Coast, in 1873. served in the Ashanti War of 1874, and in 1877. when a Major, was appointed Military Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief in Ireland. Later that, year he went, to Berlin as Military Attache and remained there four years. From Berlin he went, to the post, of Assistant Adjutant-General and Assistant Quar-termaster-General of the Home District. He served in the Egyptian War of 1882 as A.A. and Q.M.G., and was mentioned in dispatches, receiving the C. 8., the Order or Osmanie, Third Class, and the Khedive’s Star. In 1884-85 he commanded Methuen’s Horse in the Bechuanaland campaign, and received the C.M.G. Tn 1888 he was appointed Deputy Adjutant-Gen-eral in South Africa, and two years later was promoted Major-General. For five years from 1892 ho was in command of the Home District, and during the South African War of 1899-1902 he was in command of the First Division. First Army Corps. From 1903 to 1908 he was in charge of the Eastern Command, and in 1907-9 was G.O.C. in South Africa. Tn 1909 he was made Governor and Commandcr-in-Chief in Malta. Tie married twice, and leaves three sons and two daughters.
