Messrs R. H. Allen (secretary ). R. A. Keenan (publicity manager), of the Amalgamated Theatres Ltd.. Auckland, are guests at Foster’s Hotel. Air A. Hansen, \vho has taken a position with Alcssrs Hallenstoin Bros., Wanganui, has commenced his duties. Air Hansen is a well-known racing-track cyclist. Air. Carlton Alax, who has been managing the Theatre Royal, Christchurch, for Messrs. J. AVilliamson Picture Corporation, Limited, has been trail.-'-ferrod to Auckland. Air. F. O. Bell, of St. John’s College. Auckland, is expected to arrive in Pal merston North shortly to bo ordained at All Saints’ Church on St. Andrew” Day to the deaconate. Air. Frederic Ileuri Loisel, aged 81, a well-known sheepfarmer at Tolaga Bay, has passed away, says a Gisborne message, his death resulting from a recent fall from a horse. Dr. T. 11. Sprott, Bishop of Wellington, and Mr A. C. Armstrong, of Palmerston North, wore tho guests of the Wanganui Rotary Club at its weekly luncheon held yesterday. Guests registered at Foster's Hotel include the following: Afessrs H. P. Johnston (Auckland), G. H. Williden, M. A. Alanthci and I. S. Hunter (Wellington), P. Gatley (Palmerston North), G. Gibson (New Plymouth). Air. S. Walker, assistant manager of the D.1.C., AVanganui, and buyer for the silk department and the dress depart ment, leaves to-morrow for New Ply mouth, where he is to take the position of manager of AlcGruer's branch. Atr. Walker has been a member of the Wanganui D.I.C. staff for about two and a-half years, being in Auckland before that. He was yesterday morning entertained by his associate buyers.
Air A. C. Greenwood, a member of the Alarton staff of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Co., has been appointed to the staff of the •company’s head office in Feilding. He leaves Alarton this morning. Occasion was taken last evening by members of the staff to meet him and to present him with a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch. Air J. 11. C. Broad, who made the presentation extended to Air Greenwood the best of wishes for prosperity in a new sphere, and said that the Alarton branch was sorry to lose the services of so capable a member. He said that Mr Greenwood would be missed on the tennis court and the football and athletic fields, for he had always played the game as it should be played. Mr Greenwood suitably replied.
The Rev. Afatenga Tamaroki Waaka, the veteran Alaori soldier and priest of the Church of England, has died at, Afuriwai, 17 miles from Gisborne, in his 98th year. He was a most loyal subject of Queen Victoria, and was a conspicuous soldier during the Alaori War. He was the possessor of two war medals, one for service and the other for meritorious service on the field. Air. Waaka was chief in his own tribe, the Ngai Tanianuhiri, and was popularly regarded as one of the paramount chiefs of the Turanganni nnonlps. He was an
ardent student of the Bible, being one of the members of the old school under the tuition of tho late Bishop Leonard Williams. After peace, with the Alaoris was declared he accepted holy orders and was a priest in the Church until his resignation through ago and failing health in 1910.
