WANGANUI CLUB I CLUB FOURS TROPHY MARCHANT TAKES TITLE Only a few feet separated crew s .stroked by Aiaichunt and Doric in the final of the Wanganui shed’s eompe tition for the Club Fours, which was decided, lust evening. Although Alarchant’s four was behind at one stage of the event, it put in a strenuous effort and passed the finishing point a canvas ahead of Durie’s crew. Perfect conditions prevailed when a large number of supporters watched Air. K. Carr send the crews away to a good start. Alarchant immediately took the lead but was quickly overtaken by Durie, who led by a length at the Dublin Street Bridge. Alarchant’s crew commenced to creep up, however, and once the groyne was passed he began to make up the leeway. Durie’s crew was fairly well out in the stream. Opposite the St. George s Gate Baths he led Alarchant by a canvas. Both strokes called for a final sprint over the remaining distance and Marchant’s four, showing better cohesion and stamina, passed their opponents with a canvas to spare. Both crews revealed good rowing form and provided a fitting conclusion to the Club Fours racing. Deciding margins were small in all tho races and Alarchant deserved his first success as a stroke. Following were the

crews:— Alarchant (str.), Robertshaw (3), AfcLean (2), Williams (bow). Durie (str.), Nicholls (3), Gibson (2), Dale (bow). Lacing for the second round commenced last evening, when three heats were decided, Coxon losing to Edwards, Harper winning from Cox, and Holmes winning from Jones, Hodge and Gilbertson have yet to decide their event. Edwards obtained the better start in his race with Coxon and opposite the Aramoho School ho had half a length’s lead of his opponent. Thi* advantage ho increased and at Brunswick Road be was leading by a length. Coxon worked his crew hard and managed to catch up half of the distance separating tho boats but Edwards responded with a good sprint and won bv a length and a-half. ~ h After travelling 100 yards Harper secured half a length’s lead of Cox. Tho opopsing crew put in some hard work and had drawn level as tho boats shot past the Aramoho School. At Webb’s shod Cox had nosed ahead by half a length. Ho increased his lead to a length but on nearing the finish a member of the crew caught a crab with the result that Harper had no diflicultv in passing the post first.

Holmes and Jones made a good start but as they passed Webb’s shed Holmes had drawn ahead of his opponent and had placed a length of tho boat between the two crews.
