Black defeated his brother, J. L. Black, 3 and 2. Harold Black was right on his game and treated the gallery to some classy shots, returning a 73 though twice effectively stymied. It is interesting to recall that H. A. and J. L. Black were the finalists at Hokowhitu in the New Zealand amateur championship iu 1930, when H. A. Black won the title, and both arc entrants at Heretaunga. Their cards on Saturday were as follows: —

H. A. BlackOut: 5535343 4 4—36. Iu: 4 245463 5 4—37. Total 73 J. L. BlackOut: 45344556 4—4 U In: 43456434 4 —37 Total 77 Harold drove nearly green high at the first, a tremendous drive, but slightly hooked, and had to play out of the rough on the bank. His niblick shot was just over the green, but he laid tho next not eighteen inches away, aud then unaccountably missed the putt for a 4 for a half with John, who took tho hole in 4-5. The second was halved in s’s. Harold was bun kered at tho third, while John was nicely on, out Harold played a line niblick shot out of the sand and holed a throe-foot putt for a half in 3’s.

John hooked his drive on to a cart track at tho fourth and picked up and dropped in thick rough, from which his mashie shot was in the rough wide of the green to the loft. Harold pushed out into the rough from the tec, and his second was short; but ho put his third within five feet of the pin. John’s chip out of tho rough was a success, but he stymied Harold, who failed to got his ball round, and taking the hole in 4-5 was 2 up.

Fine String of Seconds A masterly mashie shot and a ninefoot putt gave Harold the fifth hole in 3. .He topped his drive at the sixth, but played a magnificent cut spoon shot to tho green. John’s drive was a trifle off the line, and his second out of the rough was short, Harold taking the hole in 4-5 and squaring the game. John hooked his second at the seventh, and he was through the green with his third. Harold, from a bee-line drive, played a superb crisp iron shot which held the line to tho pin as though it had been ruled, the ball stopping only six inches from the cup. Taking the holo in 3, Harold was 1 up. Harold’s brassie second at the eighth was another champion’s shot, straight on the pin, stopping twelve feet past. John's hooked brassie shot hit the ninth tee box and rebounded into rough, and his next was across the green, Harold taking the hole in 4-6, to be 2 up.

The ninth was halved in 4’s, as was the tenth, where John’s approach putt ran straight for the hole from the back of the green to stop inches short of it. Harold’s perfect mashie shot at the waterhole, nine feet past the pin, and a putt that rattled in with a rap, gave him the hole in 2, making him 3 up. John’s short mashie shot finding the bunker in front of the green, though he was down in 3. The twelfth was halved in 4’s, John’s approach putt again narrowly missing a 3. The thirteenth was halved in s’s. Classy Niblick Chip John’s second at the fourteenth found the bunker, and ho was too strong out, taking 6. It was Harold’s turn here to be off the line, a poorlytimed brassie shot finding the rough wide of the green to the left. Taking his niblick, he played a high pitch over the bunker, the ball rolling straight, for the cup, finishing less than six inches from it, giving him the hole in 4 and making him 4 up. Both were on the green at the long .fifteenth in 3, John’s ball inside Harold’s, a

dead stymie. The slope was against him, but Harold, trying to get the twelve-footer down, hit John’s ball and knocked it nearer. Harold's ball stopped dead and ho missed a. putt. •John taking the holo in 4-6. The next was neatly halved in 3, Harold winning
