WAR AGAINST TIPS

FRENCHMAN’S CAMPAIGN. A VERY BRAVE MAN. A determined attempt is being made by a Parisian named Jean Chariot, and a number of his friends whom ho has converted to his way of thinking, to break down the tipping system in France. Al. Chariot must - be a very brave man. He has had struck a number of metal discs resembling in size and somewhat in appearance a two-franc piece. Each disc bears on thc obverse the words: “Alake your employer pay you,” and on the reverse the words: “A tip is charity.” Whenever AL Chariot finds himself in a situation from which tho ordinary man would extricate himself by handmg a coin to a waiter, he unflinfliingly drops into the extended hand one of his little discs. Thc reaction of the men to whom discs are given is interesting Io watch. Often enough th©v pocket the piece of metal without looking at it, so accustomed are they to receiving what Al. Chariot would describe as “vicarious bounty,” without appearing to notice the transaction. But if they ever see AL Chariot again ho has difficult moments. If the recipient looks at AL Chariot’s little dis»c when it is handed to him, thc difficulty follows immediately.

Nevertheless, .says a correspondent, this daring pioneer claims that he has made some progress. Employees of tho club to which he. belongs, for instance, feel that, they cannot afford to offend him without running the risk of dismissal.
