CHILDREN'S BALL. The fancy dress children’s ball in connection with thc Raetihi Public. School was a brilliant success. The Drill Hall was tastefully decorated with streamers and greenery. Tho costumes of thc children were most original and pretty, and thc judges, Mcsdamcs I'cltham and Ashwell, and Dr. Feltham, ami Mr. R. B. Davies, had a difficult task. The proceeds were in aid of the material for the school games. Prizes were awarded as follows: — Most original boy: Wally Watson, Eve, 1; Ronny Bryers, Bass Fiddle, 2. Anderson, Amcku Road, is at present on a holiday to Wellington. Mr. F. Gibson, a former resident of the district, arrived on a visit here on Wednesday afternoon, and has been busy renewing old acquaintances. The engagement is announced of Gladys Edith, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Urwin, to Charles Edward, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Roke, of Matakana, North Auckland. Mr. C. E. Roke is at present home missionary in charge of the Raetihi-Oha-kuno circuit.

The engagement is announced of Elizabeth Joyce, eldest daughter or Mr. and Mr. A. E. Urwin, to Keith Hunter, only son of Mr. and thc late Mrs. Carl Thomsen, of Dannevirke. The engagement is announced of Anne (Girlie) eldest daughter of Air. and Mrs. W. H. B. Brown, of Shannon, to Alfred George, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Urwin, of Raetihi. Many gardeners are complaining of the ravages of the small birds, especially on the young peas. One settlor at Pukekaha declared that sparrows had destroyed the most of his edible pod pea plants, which was something unusual. Another garden lover was surprised the other morning to find nearly all his cabbage plants pulled up and left lying on the ground, the work of birds.
